IMPORTANT NOTICE Starting July 1st, 2011 The town of Westport is requiring that we implement "Single Stream Recycling" Single Stream recycling means that you no longer have to separate your recyclables, Newspapers, bottles, and cans, can be mixed together. And additional items will be required to be recycled. Click here to see Town information. Cardboard boxes including cereal boxes, milk cartons and shipping boxes must now be recycled. "Single Stream Recycling" also allows us to use the "packer" portion of our Refuse trucks. Because of the additional Items to be recycled we need to use the full capacity of our trucks - therefore we will be changing your second collection of the week to a recycling collection only. Starting July 5th, 2011 you will no longer receive 2 Refuse collections per week . Your 1st scheduled collection of the week will be for garbage only and your 2nd regular scheduled collection will be for recyclables only. If done properly the items that now must be recycled equal about 40 to 50% of your refuse . We will still be collecting everything that we collect now- just in a different way. We suggest that you now use a regular refuse can for your recyclables and place cardboard next to it for your recycling collection. While this change may seem difficult at first almost all towns and cities in Connecticut and the entire country have one refuse collection and one recycling collection per week . Recycling and the items to be recycled is required by State Law . Refuse Haulers can be fined if they recycle improperly - So we appreciate your cooperation ! Because the Town of Westport pays for our refuse to be burned at the Waste to Energy plant in Bridgeport, the more we recycle the more we save as taxpayers. Cardboard boxes must be emptied and flatend - remove all styrofoam and plastic ( put in bags for refuse collection). remove plastic bags from cereal boxes. Do not use plastic bags for recyclables. Brush, grass clippings and leaves cannot be taken with the trash or the recycling - call us for disposal options. PLEASE SEE RECYCLING LIST BELOW DO not use plastic bags to hold the recyclables.
